Physical Characteristics

• Size and Shape: Yucca rostrata is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree. It typically grows to about 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) tall, though in ideal conditions, it can reach up to 15 feet (4.5 meters). Its trunk is usually slender and can be up to 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) in diameter.

• Leaves: The plant has long, narrow, and stiff leaves that are bluish-green in color, giving it its "blue" moniker. These leaves can grow up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) long and are tipped with a sharp spine. They grow in a rosette formation at the top of the trunk.

• Flowers: Yucca rostrata produces a striking flower spike that can reach up to 3 feet (90 cm) tall. In late spring to early summer, the plant sends up a tall, branching inflorescence covered with creamy-white to pale green bell-shaped flowers.

• Fruit: After flowering, it can produce a dry, dehiscent capsule containing numerous small seeds.

Growing Conditions

• Climate: This Yucca species is well-suited to arid and semi-arid climates. It thrives in full sun and is very drought-tolerant. It can handle temperatures as low as 10°F (-12°C) and is often used in xeriscaping.

• Soil: It prefers well-drained soil, often sandy or gravelly. It’s important to avoid heavy, clayey soils that retain moisture.

• Watering: Once established, Yucca rostrata is very drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
